Information and Communication Technology (ICTs) in schools" is a centrally sponsored scheme aimed at providing information and communication technology-based learning facilities to secondary school students, developing appropriate ICT skills and providing other related opportunities. Was started from December 2004. The purpose of the scheme is to reduce the digital divide among the students behind the socio-economic and geographical reasons. Under this scheme, financial assistance is provided to the States and Union Territories for establishing stable computer laboratories. 
       The purpose of this scheme is to establish smart schools in Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas, Working as a technology exhibitor to promote ICT skills among the neighborhood schoolchildren. This scheme is currently being implemented in government schools and government aided higher secondary schools. Financial Assistance is being provided for computer and textile components, shopping of educational software, teacher training, internet connectivity etc.
       States and institutions are provided with approval from Project Monitoring and Evaluation Group, under the chairmanship of Financial Assistance, Secretary, School Education and Literacy Department.

     Information and communication technology (ICT) has been accepted as an important catalyst for universal social change and national progress. However, the level and usage of ICT readiness can be seen in the form of inequality in productivity level which can affect the country's economic growth rate. Understanding and understanding the ICT for the working countries in the field of social and economic development is very important.

  • All schools, polytechnic colleges and public hospitals in the country will be provided computer and internet facility by the year 2003.

Smart school, the emphasis of concept is not only on information technology but its efficiency and value of use, which is an important element in this century. This scheme has been started in each state of pilot basis. Its main objectives are-

  • Providing effective teaching environment for physically and mentally challenged students through information and communication technology,
  • Developing self-knowledge, promotes critical thinking and analytical skills in students. This will change the classroom from a teacher-centric site into a student-focused learning center,
  • Promote the use of information and communication technology through visual audio and satellite based equipment for providing distance education and employment.
